SHAKEY ZIMMERMAN
Performing the songs of Bob Dylan, Neil Young & More
Shakey Zimmerman is the musical creation and brainchild of Bay Area musician Pat Nevins and has become well-known for their inspiring interpretations of the music of Bob Dylan and Neil Young. The band has developed a strong following throughout the West Coast playing many shows at a wide variety of top venues.
Shakey (Neil’s nickname) Zimmerman (Bob’s given surname) have earned a reputation as one of the best live acts in the San Francisco/Oakland Bay Area playing such vaunted venues as San Francisco’s historic Great American Music Hall, the Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, The Alcazar Theatre near Santa Barbara and many more. Shakey Zimmerman bring a fresh, lively and authentic sound to welcoming crowds at many clubs, wineries, festivals, restaurants. corporate events, and private parties throughout California and beyond.
Pat Nevins is a native of Philadelphia who, after moving to Chicago, led the popular band The Deadbeats—a Grateful Dead tribute band in the 1980s and early ‘90s—and relocated to the Bay Area in 1994. With The Deadbeats, Nevins released two albums of original material which became quite popular with their fanbase. After releasing the album Shakey Zimmerman in 2003—an album of Dylan and Young tunes—Nevins began performing many more of these legendary songs both acoustically and with the band.
Nevins has tapped a variety of great musicians over the years to re-create these timeless songs and eventually launched the band, Shakey Zimmerman. Nevins has created a mostly regular group lineup including guitarist Jody Salino, who joined in recent years. Salino’s expertise at the Piedmont-style guitar fingerpicking helps the band perform some of these songs in a variety of styles while still keeping true to the original renditions
Whether in an acoustic format or with the full electric band, Shakey Zimmerman performs the best-known songs as well as many deep cuts from both Dylan and Young, something rather rare in a national music scene filled with cover bands. In fact, the band play many choice and lesser-known songs by the iconic songwriters, some of which have barely been performed live by the masters themselves.
Nevins leads the band on guitar, vocals and harmonica and has an uncanny ability to channel both artists while giving them his own stamp. Shows are packed with songs full of grit and attitude, and appeal to all generations and audiences. The group is rounded out by Roger Len Smith on bass and vocals, Chris Ulep on keyboards and vocals and alternating singing drummers, Justin Wooster and Bryan “Smitty” Smith.
Audiences will surely recognize and enjoy every song performed as Nevins makes sure to bring a full and joyous sound to these classic songs. Harmonies and splendid instrumentation galore along with nuanced and unique jams and solos combine to give music lovers both a taste of what they’ve known for decades and something quite beautifully new.
